When you first move into a new place, it’s important that you change the locks. This way, you know who has access. Here’s how you install a new door knob and deadbolt:

How to remove the old knob or deadbolt:

1. Most manufacturers have two screws on either side of the door knob. After you unscrew those, the interior and exterior assemblies can be removed.
2. The deadbolt or latch is normally secured with two screws into the door. Once you remove those screws, the latch should slide out.

How to install a new door knob:

1. Set the steel peg in the latch. To do this, you need to flip the pin to the correct position.
2. Put the latch into the door, making sure the face hits the strike plate and not the opposite way.
3. Pull the outside knob on, feeding the rod through the latch.
4. Next, slide the inside knob on and tighten down the screws.
5. Finish it off by installing a new strike plate on the door jam.

How to install a new deadbolt:

1. Following the “this end up” arrow, screw in and slide the outer cylinder into place. There should be a rod that extends through the latch and it only fits one way.
2. The inner assembly slides into place and is held together with two long screws. If your deadbolt has a faceplate, that snaps on next.
3. Finish it off by installing a new strike plate on the door jamb.
